A practical guide to Sokoban

Read the aim of Sokoban, then make your first move. Push every crate onto a target. Look at what changes after your first action. Compare the starting position with the example in the Guide. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions.

Push two crates onto their targets in compact 7×7 rooms. The starting layouts can be solved; an unhelpful push may still trap a crate.

Practice with a purpose

Locate the buttons and input area before beginning a long round. Use the on-screen labels to avoid an accidental restart. Refer to the controls when needed.

What you need to achieve

Push every crate onto a target. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Keep the controls in easy reach.

Making your moves

  1. Move through empty floor.
  2. Push one crate into empty space.
  3. Never pull or push two at once.
  4. Undo a deadlock and continue.

Using the playing area

Arrow keys or direction buttons. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Check any mode label before starting.

See how the rules apply

A crate in a non-target corner cannot be recovered by pulling. Compare this with the rule that governs the move. Look for the relevant detail.

Pay attention to this rule

Consider the player’s access behind crates. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. Compare the worked example with your own position. Use the reasoning, not an answer copied from a different board.
